Assam in Talks with ISRO to Launch Own Satellite, Aims to Be First Indian State with Exclusive Space Asset

Assam has initiated a conversation with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to become the first Indian state to have its own geostationary satellite, the estimated cost of the satellite will be 400-500 crore INR. The aim of the satellite is to have prior alerts of floor and gether crucial data of weather to help farmers.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this innovative project on Monday during the budget allocation for 2025-26 of the state.

The Need for a Dedicated Satellite

CM illustrated the importance of state-owned geostationary satellite by remembering the coal mine incident of Umrangso in January which met to the death of nine workers. He told, it took 45 days to gather the data and image of the incident from the satellite.

If we have our own satellite, it can be used exclusively for surveillance over our geographical area,” Sarma stated.

The Role of “ASSAMSAT”

The finance minister of Assam confirm that the tentative name of thBorder Securitye satellite will be “ASSAMSAT“. It will provide continuously providing the flow of data for the welfare of the state. It will also serve multiple purposes, including :-

  • Agriculture – Provide alerts regarding the weather condition to help farmers.
  • Disaster Management – enable real time information in the situation of flood which will help in providing reliefs shortly.
  • Border Security – As Assam is a bordering state it will also provide the surveillance of Anti-social elements is not happening in the state.

If this project, moves ahead as it is planned Assam will become the first Indian state to have its own satellite.
